American screenwriter and director, born on October 19, 1978 in Denver, Colorado. He is the son of Korean immigrants, and was raised on a small farm in rural Arkansas. He attended Yale University and majored in ecology. During his senior year, Chung abandoned his plans for medical school and turned to filmmaking. He studied cinema at the University of Utah and received his MFA in 2004. Chung's debut feature, Munyurangabo, premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival to huge acclaim. His film Minari (2020) gained international acclaim, and earned him two Oscar nominations for Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay.
