An English actress, born in Old Windsor, Berkshire, England. Her father ran the Labour Party branch in Old Windsor, a safe Conservative seat. She won a scholarship to Windsor County Girls' School and began her theater career at the age of 14 as an assistant stage manager at the Theatre Royal, Windsor. She made her debut at the Windsor Theater in 1946, and during the 1950s she worked with the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961. Her works include Love's Labour's Lost (2000), Foreign Body (1986), The Bawdy Adventures of Tom Jones (1976), The Littlest Horse Thieves (1976), the Jackanory series (1965), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1978), and Mapp & Lucia (1985). She died on January 30, 2015, in London, England, United Kingdom, following a stroke.
