He was a Canadian-American director, producer, and editor. He was born in Montreal, Canada. He attended both the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Pacific Coast University School of Law. He launched his career as an editor. He co-founded a film production company, Aspen Pictures. His directorial debut is The Seventh Victim (1943). He is known for Peyton Place (1957), Bright Victory (1951), and The Harder They Fall (1956). Among his rewards and nominations, he received two Oscar nominations and a Star on the Walk of Fame. He was married and had three children. He died on June 20, 1978, in London, United Kingdom, from a heart attack.
