An American actor, born in San Francisco, California, USA, on 30 August 1904. He started acting in college and began his career in traveling theater and vaudeville. He played small roles in New York until he made it to Broadway where he was very successful. His onscreen debut was in the film The Man with Two Faces (1934). Other notable works of his include The Master Key (1945), High Sierra (1941), and Backlash (1947). His last appearance was on the series Peter Gunn (1961). He died of a heart attack on 23 September 1961 in Laguna Beach, California, USA.
