A British actress, born in London, England, United Kingdom. She was discovered in the early 1970s by director Claude Whatham, at the age of 12, at an experimental children's theater in north London. She starred in her first feature film Swallows and Amazons, based on the book by Arthur Ransome, in 1974. She later appeared in the BBC series Disraeli. She also received acting training, first at the Anna Scher Theatre School and later at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Her next significant role was in Richard Loncraine's 1982 film Brimstone and Treacle, based on the Dennis Potter play, and she also appeared in Tess (1979) and Birth of a Nation (1983).
