From 2016 to 2017, he served as president of the Academy of Italian Cinema (Accademia del Cinema Italiano). For 5 years, he was president of RAI Cinema, a major film production company in which the films he produced were hugely successful at the box office, won awards worldwide, and shaped a new generation of Italian directors. His film Una bella grinta (1965) won the Special Prize of the Jury at the 15th Berlin International Film Festival.
