He was an Irish writer, born on August 28, 1814, in Dublin, Ireland, UK. He is known for writing Gothic tales, mystery novels, and horror fiction. His novel, The Fortunes of Colonel Torlogh O'Brien (1847), is considered the best in Irish history. He studied law at Trinity College Dublin but became a journalist. He published stories in the Dublin University Magazine. Some of his best known novels are The House by the Churchyar (1863), Uncle Silas (1864), and In a Glass Darkly (1872). He died on February 7, 1873, in Dublin, Ireland.
