A British actor and writer of Russian-Jewish descent, born in Hackney, London, England, UK. He won a BAFTA Award in 1955. He married Margaret Jenkins (1947-1995), they had three children, and she remained with him until her death.
After leaving the Northern Polytechnic in 1937, he worked as a furniture designer, and after a short military service during World War II, he turned to acting, first at the Unity Theatre in 1942 and then with the BBC Repertory Company, and in the early fifties, he made appearances in cinema and television. Among his notable works are The Mouse on the Moon (1963) and The Mouse That Roared (1959). He died of liver cancer in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England, UK on March 23, 2005, at the age of 85.
