Hadfield, a retired Canadian astronaut, made history as the first Canadian to walk in space. He served as a fighter pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force, flew two shuttle spaceflights, and served as commander of the International Space Station. He grew up on a farm in southern Ontario. He completed high school at Oakville and Milton School, obtained a glider license as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, joined the Canadian Armed Forces, and earned an engineering degree at the Royal Military College. He earned his Master of Aviation from the University of Tennessee Aerospace Institute through a student exchange program between the Canadian Army, US Navy, and US Air Force. The Canadian Space Agency accepted him into the Canadian astronaut program in 1992, and on STS-74, he made his first space ascent and visited the Russian space station Mir. In April 2001, Chris went back into space aboard STS-100, visited the International Space Station, and helped install the mobile service system known as Canadaarm2. In December 2012, Hadfield made his third space flight on the Soyuz TMA-07M flight, joined Expedition 35 on the International Space Station, and contributed to numerous scientific experiments on the impact of gravity on the vital functions of the human body.
