British actor born in Manchester, UK on 11 January 1886. He made his acting debut on the Canadian Theater in 1908 and in 1910 he went to the US and worked at the Washington Theater. Years later, he studied acting at RADA and became a leading actor in the 1920s. He made his onscreen debut on the film The Dreyfus Case (1931). His most notable works include The Cat and the Canary (1939), The Mad Monster (1942), Dead Men Walk (1943), and Fog Island (1945). He married actress Stella Francis and they had one child. He died of pneumonia on 28 May 1960 in Hollywood, California, US.
