A Canadian-American producer, born in London, Ontario, Canada, as Jacob Leonard Warner. He received many awards, including the Oscar, Golden Globe, David, DGA, PGA, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his cinematic activity. Jack L. Warner married twice and had two children. Among his most important works are To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), My Fair Lady (1964), and Casablanca (1942). Jack L. Warner is one of the creators of the Golden Age of Hollywood and a force in the motion picture industry. An American, he was the president and driving force behind Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank, California. His career extended for about 45 years and exceeded the duration of any of the Hollywood studio moguls. Jack Warner was born to parents of Polish Jewish immigrants. He was the youngest of 12 brothers born in Poland, America, and Canada over 16 years. His father, Benjamin, was a cobbler. He fled persecution in Germany, left his family in Bremen, and immigrated to America to work in shoe repair. The family followed him after a year. He then went to Canada, where Jack was born. The family moved to Ohio in 1896 to continue their work in shoes, and through a loan, the father opened a grocery store and a butcher shop in which Jack worked as a butcher boy. Jack then went on a singing tour in vaudeville theaters and returned when his brothers began producing films. The brothers continued to show films, and in 1906, they bought a movie theater, and the following year, they distributed films. In 1909, Harry agreed to let Jack Warner enter the family business. The brothers then sold the distribution company and moved on to producing films in 1910. Two years later, Jack Warner obtained a job as a film splicer in New York. When the film market in California grew, the four brothers, Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner established a studio in California, and Jack became a co-line producer with his older brother, Sam. They presented the film Open Your Eyes (1919), which is the only film in which Jack Warner appeared as an actor. Despite the success of the Warner company, it could not compete with the three major studios, National, Paramount, and Universal. In 1923, the brothers officially established Warner Bros., with Harry as president of the company, Albert as treasurer, Sam as CEO, and Jack as line producer. Jack succeeded, with his brother Sam, in 1927 in producing the first talkie film, The Jazz Singer (1927), but Sam died the day before the film premiered, making Jack solely responsible for production. Despite being a staunch Republican, he produced propaganda films for Democratic President Roosevelt. Although major studios fought Warner over the new sound technology, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honored the company for revolutionizing the world of cinema using sound. Warner emerged with minimal losses in 1929 after the collapse of the Wall Street stock exchange and the beginning of the Depression. It produced a wide range of films, and the studio produced 50 films a year. Jack recruited most of the New Wave writers, most of whom were leftists. He also attracted stars from other companies by giving them higher salaries. In the late 1940s, Jack was forced to respond to the rise in popularity of television. At first, he tried to fight it by producing 3D films, but the audience quickly grew tired of them. He presented with the ABC television network several television series and a weekly advertising program for Warner Brothers. Jack Warner tried to keep up with Walt Disney in animation, but he failed. In the end, he was forced to sell the cartoon characters produced by his company for $3,000 per picture. After a dispute between the three brothers, Harry, Albert, and Jack, they all agreed to sell most of the company's shares, and they were sold. The next day, the buyer resold the company's shares to Jack Warner, and after Harry and Albert understood the trick, it was too late, and Jack became the president. The brothers left the company, creating a permanent rift between them. However, Jack was then forced to sell a large share of the company for $24 million. Jack officially retired from the studio in 1969 and remained active as an independent producer until the early 1970s when he suffered a stroke in 1974 that left him blind. During the following years, he lost his ability to speak and communicate with those around him until he died in Los Angeles, California, United States of America, on September 9, 1978, as a result of water on the lung and inflammation of the heart.
