English actress, born in Solihull, United Kingdom. Her early passion was playing the piano, and she first studied to become a concert pianist for stage and radio performances at the Birmingham School of Music. After making her stage debut as a pianist in April 1924, she devoted herself entirely to acting and made three seasons of appearances on The Fol-De-Rols Show. She participated in a number of musical productions and achieved her first significant success in 1937 when she played the twin roles of Mrs. Hills and Minnie in Mourning Becomes Electra at the Westminster Theater in London. Her most important works include Double Confession (1950), The Gambler and the Lady (1952), and Cash on Delivery (1954). Late in her career, she played her most famous role in Stevie (1978), for which she received nominations for a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award. She died on November 15, 1988, in London, England, United Kingdom.
