An Austrian novelist, born in Mürzzuschlag, Styria, Austria, to a Czech Jewish father, who was a survivor of the Nazi German Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, and a German Catholic mother. She received a religious education in a Catholic school, and in 1960, she began her musical studies, learning to play several musical instruments. Then she continued her studies in music composition at the Vienna Conservatory and studied art history and theater science in addition to her musical studies. In 1967, she began publishing her creative works, which highlighted her as a writer and political activist. In 1974, the writer joined the Austrian Socialist Party but left it in 1991. In 2004, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for her works that reveal, with great linguistic enthusiasm, the problems of prevailing social clichés.
