A British actor born in Bedford, Bedfordshire, on April 5, 1912. He attended public school in Dorset, England. He worked in a law firm, but left the law with the approval of his father, and joined the Faye Compton Studio for theatrical arts. He graduated in 1933 and stood on stage for the first time in 1934, and practiced acting in the theater of reference. Until the outbreak of World War ll, where he served in North West India, and after the war he returned again to the theater. He got married three times and had two sons. He appeared in several films with small roles until he made the movie Death in the Hand (1948). He was awarded the BAFTA Television Award in 1972. His most important works are: The Italian Job (1969), Dad's Army (1971), The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother (1975), and The Moon-Spinners (1964). He died in 1983 at the age of 71. |
