American screenwriter, film producer, director, and actor, born on August 11, 1867, in Marietta, United States. He is a direct descendant of Miles Standish and John and Priscilla Alden on his father's side and of New York's Van Zandt family, the first Dutch settlers to land in the New World, on his mother's side. His father was a naval captain in the Civil War. When he was 12 years old, he ran away from home and worked as a cabin boy. In 1885, he got a job with McKee Rankin at the California Theatre in San Francisco. This led to him being part of a road company for one season as an actor and as Louis Morrison's costume designer. By 1887, he acted at the Alcazar Theatre in San Francisco and became skilled enough to give Shakespearean recitals. He was known for The Big Parade (1925), The Sea Wolf (1913), and The White Scar (1915). He died on December 30, 1943, in Glendale, California, USA, of pneumonia.
