British-American actress, born in Midland, United States. She went to school in Midland until the eighth grade, at which point her family relocated to Arizona, then New Mexico, and finally settled in Hollywood, California. Her mother sent her to Biograph Studios with the hope of pursuing a career in acting. D. W. Griffith, recognizing her beauty and acting talent, cast her in several of his films, including a small role in Intolerance (1916). She also appeared in Reggie Mixes In (1916) and The Aryan (1916). In the 1920s, she began acting in more mature roles, such as Those Who Dance (1924) and The King on Main Street (1925), and gave one of her best performances in Dress Parade (1927). When sound films became popular, she made a number of them and received an Academy Award nomination for The Broadway Melody (1929). She then appeared in several other works, such as The Ritz (1976), Mousey (1974), and Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971). She died in London on April 26, 1986.
