British singer and actress, born in Marylebone, London, United Kingdom. Her relatives are actress Fay Compton and author Compton Mackenzie. She received her education at Heron's Ghyll, an independent boarding school in Sussex, and then spent six years in South Africa. At the age of 14, she returned to school and enrolled at the Central School of Speech and Drama. She appeared in several productions on stage in London's West End theater. She made her film debut in The Second Mrs. Tanqueray (1952), then appeared in Father's Doing Fine (1952). Her works continued, such as the Oscar-nominated film The Cruel Sea (1953), Big Time Operators (1957), Born Free (1966), and The Camomile Lawn (1992).
