He was educated at George Heroin School in Edinburgh. After initially enlisting in the Merchant Navy, receiving a scholarship to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) as a former soldier. He made his stage debut in 1947, while his first film was You Only. Young Twice 1952. He appeared on several television programs, mostly in roles of public and private detectives. His most important works: The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Murder at the Gallop (1963), Jango (1961) and Knights of the Round Table (1953). He worked until the late eighties in film and television, and his last film appearance was in the 1987 movie Testimony and the last television appearance in Ruth Rendell Mysteries 1994. He died at the age of 74.
