A British film, television, and theater actor, born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, UK. He was educated at Hanson Boys' Grammar School in Bradford, and entered the theater in his late teens. He appeared on both British and American stages throughout his career. He served as a pilot in the British Royal Air Force during World War I, and after the war he continued his theatrical work, performing in West End theatres, and began appearing in films in the early thirties, until he starred in the film Pygmalion (1938) to attract the attention of Hollywood.
He spent some time in the US, then returned to Britain, and excelled in the roles of eccentrics and obsessed people, but his addiction to alcohol affected his professional life. He married Lillian Emily Fenn in 1922. Among his notable works: The Viking Queen (1967), War and Peace (1956) and Pastor Hall (1940). He died of a heart attack in Kensington, London, England, UK, at age 66.
