An Indian actress, born to an Orthodox family in Nashik, India. Her father was a wealthy silk and cotton merchant. She began her acting career at the age of nine, playing leading roles in silent-era films and films of the 1940s, in a career spanning seven decades, that continued until the end of her life. She appeared in hundreds of works, such as Anari (1959), Anand (1971), Suraj (1966), Bedaag (1965), and Sangam (1964). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Anari. She died on 24 February 1998 in Pune, Maharashtra, India.
