Puerto Rican actor born on July 19, 1896 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His role in Intruder in the Dust (1949) earned him nominations for both Golden Globe and New York City Film Critics awards. He was born to a Puerto Rican father and a Brazilian mother. He didn't receive formal education, and he worked as a sailor and settled in Rio de Janeiro. Later he left Hollywood and returned to Puerto Rico. He spent much of his childhood in Brazil, singing in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, begging for money for food, and working in the circus. He also became a professional boxer in the 1920s. His cinematic success began in the early thirties. On television, he made guest appearances on dozens of series. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage on July 17, 1970 (age 73) in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
