An Australian actress, born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, as Elizabeth Diane Cilento. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1964 for the film Tom Jones (1963) and was nominated for a Golden Laurel Award for the same film. Diane Cilento married three times and had two children. Her most important works are Hombre (1967), Tom Jones (1963), The Wicker Man (1973), and The Persuaders! (1972). Cilento was born the fifth of 6 children in Australia to parents who were practicing doctors. Diane studied in Queensland, Australia. At an early age, she decided to pursue her career as an actress. After she got expelled from her school in Australia, she traveled with her father to New York, where she continued her education. She trained in acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and obtained a scholarship in 1950 to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. She appeared in minor roles in theatre, television, and cinema before graduating. After her graduation, she began her film career and obtained her first leading role in the movie Passage Home (1955). On television, she was a guest on many series, the most prominent of which was the series Tycoon (1978). In the eighties, her work on screen decreased as she owned and managed her own theater. She died in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, on October 6, 2011, from cancer.
