She studied at a local high school around her hometown, then attended Yale, where she studied music and linguistics. She also attended Harvard University for her master's degree. She began her career when she was still a student at Yale and participated in many plays. She made her film debut in The World According to Garp (1982). Her other credits include Harry & Son and Miami Vice. She's married to John Turturro and they have two children.
