A Korean-American actor and activist, born as Pil Lip Ahn in Highland Park, Los Angeles, California, USA. In 1984, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming the first Asian-American actor to receive that star. He began acting in the mid-1930s, playing hundreds of Chinese and Japanese characters and excelling in villain roles. He attended the University of Southern California. He was also a successful restaurant owner in Los Angeles. He served in the US Army during World War II. In the late sixties, he made a USO tour of Vietnam. His works include Impact (1949), Macao (1952), and Stowaway (1936). He died of pneumonia in Los Angeles, California, USA on February 28, 1978, at the age of 72.
