A French director, actor and screenwriter, born in Paris, France. One of the pioneers of the silent era, he began his career as a theater actor at the Odeon Theater in Paris, then moved to the Éclair Films studio, where he became chief director of its theatre school. He entered the world of silent cinema in 1907 in Paris, then traveled to the United States in 1915, and worked there as a director for a number of films, before returning to acting until his death. He married Alice Archainbaud, and she remained with him until her death in 1920. Among his notable credits are The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1919), The Man Who Forgot (1917), and Shanghai Express (1932). He died of organ failure on April 24, 1934 in Los Angeles, California, USA, at age 69.
