American musician, writer, actress, and comedian, born in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Redmond, Washington, to a Jewish family.
Her father was a lawyer and her mother was a teacher. Her parents divorced when she was fourteen years old, and she lived with her father and her younger sister. She attended Lake Washington School District and then moved to The Overlake School. She began learning guitar at the age of 15 and took lessons with the artist Jeremy Enigk. She attended Western Washington University before transferring to Evergreen State College, where she met Corin Tucker and Tobi Vail. She formed the band Excuse 17. She graduated from Evergreen in 1997 and stayed in Olympia, Washington for three years, then moved to Portland, Oregon. She is the writer, actress, and co-developer of the sketch comedy show Portlandia (2011) on IFC TV.
