British writer and director, born on August 2, 1899, in West Sussex, England, United Kingdom. He is the son of the actress Lilian Langrishe Bennett. He played child roles in stage productions of Alice in Wonderland (1913) and Goody Two Shoes (1913). He fought in France during World War I when he was still a teenager and resumed his acting career after the end of the war. He was awarded the Military Medal and ended the war with the rank of lieutenant. He got married to the actress Faith Bennett but they got divorced in 1941. In 1947, he got married to Betty Jo Riley. He is known for The 39 Steps (1935), Madness of the Heart (1949), and Foreign Correspondent (1940). He died on June 15, 1995, in Los Angeles, California, USA.
