An Irish author, screenwriter, director, and actress, born in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, the daughter of Sir William Aitken, a Conservative MP, and Penelope Aitken, whose father was Baron John Maffei. Maria's grandfather was the British representative to Ireland (1939–1949), and her brother is Jonathan Aitken, a British journalist and politician. Maria attended Riddlesworth Hall Preparatory School in Norfolk, Sherborne Girls' School in Dorset, and St. Anne's College, Oxford, where she graduated with a degree in English Language and Literature. She has appeared in Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), A Fish Called Wanda (1988), Fierce Creatures (1997), and the television series Poor Little Rich Girls (1984), which she co-wrote and starred in.
