An Indian actress, born in Delhi, India. She is of Pashtun descent. She starred in several successful films in the 1950s and 1960s and is widely considered one of the most talented actresses to have graced the Hindi cinema screen. Her family then moved to Mumbai when she was eight years old. She began her acting career at the age of nine, when she appeared in Basant (1942). She then acted in several films as a child artist, including Mahal (1949), Pardes (1950), Mughal-E-Azam (1960), and Shirin Farhad (1956).
