He began his career as a romantic lead in silent films, and after the advent of sound, he continued to act in supporting roles for decades. He graduated from Purdue University in Indiana. He won the Photoplay Award in 1923, and he also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his film work in 1960. He was married three times and had two children. Among his notable works are Those Who Dance (1930), Main Street (1923) and Key Largo (1948). He died of a heart attack in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA on February 18, 1963, at age 76.
