An Irish actor and director, born in Dublin, Ireland. He worked in theater, film, and television in Ireland and the United States. He studied at Belvedere College and worked as a journalist. In 1907, he joined the Irish National Theater, and worked on Broadway from 1908-1947 and presented 35 Broadway productions, in addition to his film work, and in the early fifties he worked on television. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his film activities. He never married or had children. Among his notable credits are 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Gone with the Wind (1939) and The Wolf Man (1941). He died in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA, on April 29, 1964, at age 79.
