An American actor, born in Philadelphia on May 5, 1908. He got married twice and had a child. He was widely seen in cinema and television during the 1950s and 1960s. Robert was born to a railroad worker. He attended the University of Pennsylvania as an architecture student, and took an interest in theater while he was at school. He joined the US Army Air Force in 1942 during World War II, and was assigned to make training films. After his discharge from the army in 1946 he worked with Cecil B.D. Mill as a dialogue director and then appeared in movies. His first film was Road House in 1948. He quickly became a familiar face in movies, playing the roles of police officers and sheriffs in western films. Among his most important works: Bonanza (1960-1968), The Maltese Falcon (1941), Steel Against the Sky (1941) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955). He died in 1989 of coronary artery blockage at the age of 80.
