A British actress, born as Edna Winifred Mitchell in Ipswich, England, UK. She trained in dancing at the Arts Educational Schools in London and gave up her dancing career after injuring her knee. She began acting in the local repertory theater. She made her film debut in The Romantic Age (1949). She also worked in radio for 10 years in The Goon Show, where she provided voices for most of the female characters.
Starting in the mid-seventies, she became active as a playwright, screenwriter, and poet. She married actor and writer Philip Guard in 1952, they had three children, and they divorced in 1968. Among her notable works are Persuasion (1971), Out of the Darkness (1985), and The Adventures of Black Beauty (1972-1974). She died of pneumonia following breast cancer and myeloma in Chiswick, London, England, UK on May 2, 2012.
