During her career (1935-1979), she presented 23 feature films, 2 short films, and 3 television series as an actress and as a writer in 7 works, in addition to hundreds of musical plays, and many singing albums.


She was a member of the Church of Christ Scientist, a religious organization based on Christian foundations of spiritual healing.


She was made an Officer of the Order of the Empire (OBE) in 1946, a Dame Commander of the Order of the Empire (DBE) in 1980, and her portrait appeared on a commemorative postage stamp in 1998.


She was afflicted with eye cancer and had surgery to remove it and replace it with an artificial one in 1973. She continued to work without telling anyone about her condition, until she became seriously ill in 1979 and died a month later.
