She made her stage debut in 1939 and wrote satire shows for the BBC. Her film debut was on Adventure for Two (1943) followed by The Lamp Still...Read more Burns (1943). Other notable works of hers include Stage Fright (1950), The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950) and The Americanization of Emily (1964). She married Reggie Grenfell and did not have children. She died of ocular cancer on November 30, 1979 in Chelsea, UK.

  • She was afflicted with eye cancer and had surgery to remove it and replace it with an artificial one in 1973. She continued to work without telling anyone about her condition, until she became seriously ill in 1979 and died a month later.
  • She was made an Officer of the Order of the Empire (OBE) in 1946, a Dame Commander of the Order of the Empire (DBE) in 1980, and her portrait appeared on a commemorative postage stamp in 1998.
