He was a champion in fishing competitions and an advisor to the Irish, Icelandic and Egyptian associations. In 1969, when he was one of the contestants in the Middle East Fishing Championship, the Egyptian Navy opened fire on his boat, believing that there were Israeli commandos on board. He was arrested and detained for several hours, before being released.
