A British character actor born in Derby, Derbyshire, UK. He began his stage career in 1908 and appeared in over 40 Broadway productions and in the early 1930s, he moved to Hollywood to pursue a film career. His onscreen debut was on the film The Royal Family of Broadway (1930). His other notable works include Call of the Wild (1935), The Ox-Bow Incident (1942), and The Snake Pit (1948). His last film was The Bramble Bush (1960). He won a Tony Award in 1957. He married Helen Robbins in 1919 and had one child before they divorced. He died of heart problems on 24 February 1964 in New Jersey, USA. |
