A British actress born in Lancashire, UK. As a teenager, she began her career as chorus girl, then she joined the Birmingham company then the Royal Shakespeare Company, at which she stayed for a long time, during which she managed a hotel near Stratford. She appeared on British TV in the 1930s at the beginnings of its broadcast. She made her film debut on Millions Like Us (1943). Her notable works include Peeping Tom (1960), David Copperfield (1986), Little Dorrit (1987), and Doctor Who (1987). She married twice and had twin daughters with her first husband and adopted a son with her second. She died on 19 February 1996 in London, UK.
