A British actor born in London, England, UK. He was a tea merchant before acting and he studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He then began his career on stage in the 1920s. He made his onscreen debut on The Good Companions (1933). He continued to appear in the West End theater in addition to his work in cinema. He appeared on 5 Alfred Hitchcock films that helped him rise to fame. His notable works include Hue and Cry (1947), Fly Away Peter (1948), Passport to Pimlico (1949), and I'll Get You (1952). He died on 22 September 1979 in Berkshire, England, UK.
