An American actor, born as Herbert Maurice Voland in New Rochelle, New York, USA, on October 2, 1918. He married Betty Jean Carlton (1946-1981), they had two children and she stayed with him until his death. Among his notable works are Play of the Week (1960), Airplane! (1980), The Love God? (1969) and M*A*S*H (1972-1973).
He started at onoadway, and was most popular in the 1960s and 1970s, playing gruff executives or military officers and police captains in either light sitcoms or crime dramas. He attended Columbia University and studied at the American Theatre Wing before starting his career on Broadway. After World War II, he began appearing on television during its golden age. He died of a stroke in Riverside, California, USA, on February 26, 1981, at the age of 62.
