A British film, stage and television actor, born in Gloucestershire, England. He attended Marlborough College and RADA. He worked on stage in 1922 and after 3 years he appeared in the West End in London. His film debut was Josser on the Farm in 1934. He appeared in minor roles during the thirties and forties, then became a key player in the British cinema during the fifties. He got married twice and had three children. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play in 1957 and 1973, and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1980. His notable works include My Fair Lady (1964), Let's Make Love (1960), and The Third Man (1949). He died of heart failure in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles on May 6, 1991. |
