An American child actor who played the lead role in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938). His four grandparents were Irish, and his father was a firefighter. He had 12 siblings. He was educated at a parochial school in the Bronx. He served in the US Army during World War II, on the European front. He earned a doctorate in education from Michigan State University and worked as a high school teacher in Culver City. He also worked in Liberia as a Peace Corps official in the late 1960s. Upon his return to the United States, he held an important position in the Department of Agriculture. Tommy Kelly died in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, on January 26, 2016, of congestive heart failure at the age of 90.
