An American university professor, author, and translator, born in New York, United States. He has English, German, Scottish, and Irish ancestry. He is the brother of John Thurman, a cellist who worked with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Robert Thurman attended Phillips Exeter Academy from 1954 to 1958, then joined Harvard University. He obtained a bachelor's degree in 1962 before undertaking graduate studies in the Sanskrit language. He obtained a master's degree in 1969 and then a doctorate. He also has many books on Tibetan Buddhism and worked as a professor of these studies at Columbia University in New York, USA. His credits include Hamlet (2000) and L’arte della felicità (2013).
