A British actor, born in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. He married three times and had one child. His most important works include Rebecca (1940), Pride and Prejudice (1940), and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). He emigrated to the United States in the mid-1930s and continued his artistic career there.
He attended several English public schools, including King Edward's School in Birmingham. He was drawn to theater as a teenager and made his first appearance in a Stratford theater in 1914 when he was 18 years old. His artistic career was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. He was captured and imprisoned for some time by the Germans.
After the war, he returned to the theater in 1921, made his London debut in 1924, and continued his theatrical performances until the early 1930s. His first short film was All Riot on the Western Front (1930), and his first feature film was Black Coffee (1931).
He worked in Broadway theaters and later became a theater director. He played television roles in the 1950s but returned to the theater in 1958, and in the 1960s, he played interesting theatrical roles in Broadway theaters. He died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, USA, on March 31, 1973, of cancer.
