His first screen appearance as a young boy was in the silent short film Aways Tell Your Wife (1914), and his first feature film was A Master of Craft (1922). He made several silent films before appearing in his first talkie, and his first television appearance was in the miniseries The Blakes (1955). His last work was the film The Wicker Man (1973), after which he retired from acting, and he died in Exeter, Devon, England, United Kingdom, on December 1, 1987, of a heart attack.
