He married the actress Elyse Knox (1944-1990), had three children and remained with him until his death. He was the youngest of six siblings, was born to a father who worked as a real estate agent of Irish, French and German descent, and to a mother of Irish descent who worked as a clerk in a census office. America's entry into World War II, limited his professional football career, and he was drafted into the US Air Force. He won the Purple Heart Award, and the Silver Star as a fighter pilot. When his plane went down, he jumped with a silk parachute to escape death. He transformed the parachute into a wedding dress, when he got married in 1944. He returned to football after the war, but injuries prevented him from completing his career, so he turned into a radio and television sports announcer, then became a movie star. His major works include: Off Limits (1952), Harmon of Michigan (1941), All American (1953) and Bonzo Goes to College (1952). He died in 1990 of a heart attack at the age of 70.
