An American actress and singer born on March 29, 1918 in Virginia, USA. She was raised in the Bloodfields neighborhood of Newport News, Virginia. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in nearby Norfolk, Virginia, the first city in the area to offer higher education to black students. She made her stage singing debut when she was 15. She began singing and dancing in black nightclubs in Philadelphia in the 1930s, providing voices for animated works, such as Tubby the Tuba (1976). and The Fox and the Hound (1981). He returned to Broadway in 1975. He died on August 17, 1990 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA of heart failure.
