He was born to a jazz-playing father and owned a bakery, and he was the elder sister of the King of Jazz Musician Les Brown Sr., who owned a band. He began playing the trumpet at the age of nine, and when he was fourteen, he played the baritone and received a music scholarship to study the baritone trumpet at the New York Military Academy. He became the leader of the academy's dance troupe, which he graduated from in 1943. He and joined his brother's band Les Brown. He held the position of the trombone bassist for 60 years. He was playing, dancing, and singing with the band. He met the fan Betty and married her in 1957. He got his first movie role in Kilroy Was Here (1947), and his second movie was Duchess of Idaho (1950). He presented a movie every three years, until his last film, The Nutty Professor (1963). Bob Hope participated in his tours with USO to entertain American soldiers in the Korean War and accompanied him for 16 years every Christmas.
