An American actor, born in Salem, Massachusetts, USA. He married Ora Esther Claud (1907-1949), they had a child, and she remained with him until her death. His most important works include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Li'l Abner (1940), and Christmas in Connecticut (1945). He was a prolific film and television actor, and he worked in more than 250 films from the 1930s until his death. He played small and supporting roles, and his first work was Central Airport (1933). He appeared in dozens of TV shows and played the role of Santa Claus in many TV shows. He also worked in theater for 30 years before appearing on the screen. He made his last movie, Go, Johnny, Go! (1959), and then appeared in some TV shows until he died in Burbank, California, USA on December 22, 1961 of cardiovascular disease.
