A British actor born in England, on August 31, 1927. He was married to Diana Fay (1954-2012) and they had two children and she remained with him until his death. He was educated at King Edward VI School, and trained at the Central School of Speech and drama, where he won a gold medal. He served in the Volunteer Reserve of the Royal Navy from 1945 to 1947. His artistic start was in 1953 in the theater, and he presented many plays. His television debut was in 1955. Among his most important works: Smiley's People (1982), An Englishman's Castle (1978) and The Sullivan Brothers (1964). He presented his last work in the series The Bill (2004) and then stopped until he died in 2012 at the age of 84.
